Mid Career
Hüsker Dü's mid career is the most important part of their career. They changed what punk rock could be, and they did things that punk bands were not supposed to do such as use instruments like pianos and acoustic guitars. They also did things like use studio tricks such as backwards instruments and layered sounds with lots of overdubs. Hüsker Dü's songs changed from fast and short to melodic and longer like pop songs from the 1960s. One example of this was "Diane," which had a melody you could follow and remember. It was also their first song to make it onto college radio. Some of their songs could not be played live, like "The Tooth Fairy and The Princess," which used a backwards guitar and lots of overdubbed vocals. Another unusual song, "Reoccuring Dreams," was over fourteen minutes long, which was very long for a punk song but not for a jazz song, which it sounded like. Hüsker Dü also put out Zen Arcade, a double album, something which no hardcore punk band had ever done before. Zen Arcade was also a concept album, meaning it told a story with music. Before Hüsker Dü put out Zen Arcade, concept albums were thought to be stupid and un-punk. "With Zen Arcade, it was like such a punk thing to do, to do something so hippie," said Grant Hart in an interview for the movie Every Everything. Following Zen Arcade the band sounded more like pop music mixed with punk rock. Hüsker Dü released two new records, Flip Your Wig and New Day Rising, which got them signed to a major label, Warner Bros. making them the first hardcore punk band to be signed to a major label.
